Trying to quit drinking is one of the most difficult undertakings one can master if he or she has a drinking problem. Alcoholism is a widespread problem throughout society; a problem that has many different origins. Because alcohol is present in a variety of social situations, it can be difficult to realize that one is drinking to much or to reduce one’s drinking should a drinking problem arise.

There are a variety of programs available to any individual who finds that he or she desires assisting in combating their drinking problem. Twelve step programs, institutionalized in-patient, detox programs and out-patient mental health therapy are among them. It is important to realize that alcoholism is a disease and, as such, may require professional attention, such as counseling or a quit drinking pill.

Should you question whether you are simply a social drinker or have a drinking problem, there are telltale signs that can guide you if you are willing to be honest with yourself about your drinking. Having more than one drink per day (for women) or two drinks per day (for men), never being able to have just one drink, lying about or hiding your drinking, often drinking more than you intend to, neglecting your duties and responsibilities as result of your drinking, blacking out as result of drinking, encountering drinking problems as result of your drinking, and relationship problems as result of your drinking are all signs of a drinking problem. The more telltale signs present, the more likely there is a severe drinking problem that needs to be addressed.

The first step to conquering a drinking problem is admitting you have a problem. Once a person is willing to admit they have a problem, it is only then that he or she can do something about it. If you have a drinking problem, there is help.
